What comes first? The smile or the things to smile about?

OK, time for me to share - one of my favorite websites amongst the gazillions of websites that you can find.

Perhaps good news will never sell - a newspaper or a TV show. This link isn't about good news. It's about thought provoking videos to make one assess their own philosophies.

While the creator, - Nik Askew, has been inconsistent as of late because he has immigrated to a new country, he usually has a new video every Monday morning at 9. It's not a fancy website. This is one where Substance rules over Style.

...just the way I like it.

Check out this weeks entry here

You can also catch the entire library of past videos here

You can thank me for the experience later - really....you can.

Why it happened - we debrief after we do a training call
Why it made me happy - I was recognized as "Nutster rocks!" Hey, you put some time into other people and they appreciate it.

HappyUP!!! - meeting with a potential business source
Why it happened - one of my direct reports set it up
Why it made me happy - we had a good meeting. We may do some business. I learned some things.

HappyUP!!! - breakfast
Why it happened - I do that with a direct report on occasion
Why it made me happy - we discussed some critical business strategies....and had some fun

HappyUP!!! Day 292

HappyUP!!! - being sought out for advice
Why it happened - I am conducting training outside my world
Why it makes me happy - who knows if the people will use the guidance that they asked for. It is kind of nice, however, to be asked for advice. Sometimes, in my own backyard, I feel like I am underutilized by the people downline from me.

HappyUP!!! - travel went perfectly
Why it happened - I'm lucky?
Why it makes me happy - I just wanted to get home. The cab was waiting outside the hotel for me. There was no traffic to speak of in LA (a rarity) as I think I just ducked under the window for that. The plane was on time. My bag came right out. Best of all, I found my truck in the parking garage right away......despite having not written down where I had parked. I didn't have to do the "row to row" zombie walk.

HappyUP!!! - helped fix two deals for my downline
Why it happened - the deals got sideways
Why it makes me happy - it's good to know where to push the buttons when you need to. The underwriter picked the phone right up....a rarity....and we got down to business. I like taking care of my peeps.

HappyUP!!! Day 291

HappyUP!!! - a room with a view
Why it happened - I was conducting training at Industry Hills
Why it makes me happy - there is no question that I would have been HAPPIER if I was playing this golf course. Yet, knowing there was no time on this trip for that, I still got some enjoyment from seeing this outside my balcony. Tiger Woods played this tract a lot as he grew up.

HappyUP!!! - spending some one on one with a new colleague
Why it happened - we had a drink in the "executive lounge" after a day of training
Why it makes me happy - he has been around a while. He knows some influential people in the company. It was interesting to get his take on the things in the company. He gave me a piece of "news" as well.

HappyUP!!! - got a favor from a friend
Why it happened - it was the law of reciprocity
Why it makes me happy - I did something for her....and she returned the favor. She didn't really need to but I sure appreciated it.

HappyUP!!! Day 290 - on the road training new hires

HappyUP!!! - today's session went well
Why it happened - I have done it before and am always trying to improve
Why it makes me happy - I am helping new hires feel better about working here. I am helping them change the way they think. I can identify where they are at. There may be someone in that group that says years from now, "I heard something from this guy a long time ago at a training....I have never forgotten it....it made a difference in my career.

HappyUP!!! - bread pudding
Why it happened - it was a dessert option at lunch
Why it made me happy - how often do you get a chance to have bread pudding? Delicious

HappyUP!!! - skipped dinner
Why it happened - I made a decision
Why it made me happy - these trainings are a dangerous place when it comes to weight gain. I had a big lunch......with bread pudding. I said, "Nutster, if you have the bread pudding, you get no dinner." I held to the commitment!

HappyUP!!! Day 289

HappyUP!!! - my work computer is back
Why it happened - we did a swap out on thursday
Why it makes me happy - I gave my work computer in blind faith to the tech people. I did not back up. There was no point. I had to trust that everything that was on my hard drive would be backed up to the corporate server and reloaded on to my machine. It worked! Flawlessly!!!

HappyUP!!! - easy call to the help desk
Why it happened - see above HappyUP!!!
Why it makes me happy - calling the help desk was part of the process. We encountered virtually no issues.

HappyUP!!! - easy travel
Why it happened - I went to the airport early
Why it makes me happy - bad things can happen when you travel. Good things do to....especially if you aren't too stressed to notice them. My plane was on time, the flight was great, we landed, I got my bag, and a cab. No issues

HappyUP!!! Day 288

HappyUP!!! - birdieing the first hole...parring the second....and birdieing the third
Why it happened - because of my exceptional golf skills?
Why it makes me happy - hey, I was two under after three holes.....on one of the most difficult golf courses that I have ever played. This was 7300 yards of beast in the wind. By the end of the day, 2 under turned into 17 over but at least I got off to a good start.

HappyUP!!! - making a 10 footer on the last hole
Why it happened - I needed it
Why it makes me happy - the pressure was on. If I miss that putt, my partner and I lose some bets. I got up and drilled it into the back of the cup. Ahhhhhhh.....I can still hear the roar of the crowd.

HappyUP!!! - winning a couple of skins
Why it happened - see the previous HappyUP!!!
Why it makes me happy - Nobody of the other 17 golfers birdied the first hole. It was also a stroke hole for me so I got a gross skin and a net skin. At that point, I was free wheeling the rest of the day.

HappyUP!!! - winning $140 at blackjack
Why it happened - the golf course was next to the Indian Casino
Why it makes me happy - I was up.....then I was down $150....then I was up $230....and I just decided to get up and look for the guys I was with in the Casino at that point. I was getting good cards but I'd had enough. In another day, I would still be playing. It's nice to walk out a winner!

HappyUP!!! - sleeping during the rain
HappyUP!!! - early morning pick up and drive
HappyUP!!! - golfing with 17 other guys
HappyUP!!! - seeing a long lost golf contact

Saturday, November 10, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 287

HappyUP!!! - breakfast
Why it happened - it happens out on Saturday
Why it makes me happy - I got my weekly chat with my friend.

HappyUP!!! - finding the cell phone
Why it happened - I looked hard
Why it makes me happy - I am heading out of town. It would have been a major nosebleed had it gone lost last night.

HappyUP!!! - being out late
Why it happened - I was invited
Why it makes me happy - I am not a night owl. It is good to get out once in awhile....even if it was a bit of a dive bar. Nope...I don't want to make a habit of it. I missed my morning which makes me appreciate it more. (Hey, this happened yesterday...why is it a HappyUP!!! today?.....hey.....it was a late night....yesterday became today!)

Friday, November 09, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 286

HappyUP!!! - 18 holes of golf
Why it happened - rate of play sped up
Why it makes me happy - I love to finish what I start. Teeing off at 1:30, it didn't look like we would get done before dark. Visibility was poor on the last hole but we got it done.

HappyUP!!! - checked out the new restaurant
Why it happened - we were hungry
Why it makes me happy - I can say that "I've been there." Now, that's not a big deal...especially because I only had appetizers so I haven't really tested the fare at Paul Martin's. I have seen inside. I have sat at the bar. It looks like a pretty cool place so I am sure I will be eating there soon.

HappyUP!!! - some "striped" golf shots
Why it happened - working on the swing
Why it makes me happy - sometimes you play 18 without ever hitting a perfect shot. I probably had 4 or 5 today. Now, I just have to make those bad ones not be as bad!

Thursday, November 08, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 285

HappyUP!!! - visit from my assistant's daughter
Why it happened - my assistant got picked up by her husband
Why it made me happy - I don't get to see this little one very often. I am told
she isn't shy.....but she was sure shy around me. No, I didn't put on a scary mask
and try to spook her. Oh....wait....maybe just me sitting behind my desk smiling was
like a horror story. Yikes! My poor self esteem. Anyway, we had a lot of fun with her shyness.
I also learned that, with this little one, candy seemed to overcome fear!

HappyUP!!! - call from a client
Why it happened - he dialed me up
Why it made me happy - I learned some things about the market. He also was extending himself
to try to help me. That felt good

HappyUP!!! - a Toastmasters DVD
Why it happened - Toastmasters sent me one
Why it made me happy - it's a quality recruiting piece. It really explains what we do at
Toastmasters.

HappyUP!!! Day 284

HappyUP!!! - unplanned PTO
Why it happened - I took it
Why it made me happy - I was going to take Monday off and go to Phoenix early. I decided not to go to Phoenix early....but I made up for it today. I am not good about taking time off. You may not think this is a big deal. A day of hooky is to me.

HappyUP!!! - weather
Why it happened - who knows
Why it made me happy - I knew it was coming...the weather. It was one of the reasons I have the previous HappyUP!!! I soaked in a perfect 72 degree day today out on the golf course. I kept using the word, "stunning," with my golf partner. It was unbelievable. It just felt so good to be alive. The golf was "stunning" too in a different way....eeks. That is not what I remember.

HappyUP!!! - helping my golf partner
Why it happened - he asked for help
Why it made me happy - when you can help a person on the golf course and they start nailing the driver, there is nothing better. This guy had s ome good form. He was trying to fix something the logical way....but golf can be very counter-intuitive. Anyway, when he left the golf course, he was excited about the next trip to the links. Hey, my golf may have been off (working on a swing change).....but I can still help someone.

Tuesday, November 06, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 283

HappyUP!!! - good meeting with the boss
Why it happened - we had an impromptu meeting before the site visit in Phoenix
Why it makes me happy - it's good to see all of my peers face to face and hear what they are going through. I also got a commitment out of my boss for us to get on a plane and get something fixed.

HappyUP!!! - travel went well
Why it happened - I got to the airport early
Why it makes me happy - it just doesn't make sense to cut it close...especially when you have a laptop and can get some things done at the airport. If I am traveling on business, I just refuse to cut it close. It's not worth the stress. Plus, I carried on and my flight arrived early....back home for a nice night in my own bed.

HappyUP!!! - shuttle ride
Why it happened - the hotel provided it
Why it made me happy - it's a long story. Here we were....high powered managers...6 of us. We had all flown to Phoenix to visit a site.....and none of us knew where it was. The number of phone calls we had to place was comical. We got two different addresses and almost took off to the wrong one. One could be shuttled to. The other required a cab. The cab was on it's way until we got confirmation we were within shuttle difference. "hey, someone send me a tent.....I need something to throw over this circus!" Then, all 6 of us packed into the mini-van. Nice and cozy.

HappyUP!!! Day 282

HappyUP!!! - travel went flawlessly
Why it happened - who knows...it's a crapshoot
Why it makes me happy - I got to the airport about 3 hrs early...maybe 3 and a half. I had the laptop with me so it doesn't matter where I do my work from. The airline had a flight going out before mine...about an hour before. They had to cancel it. They said over the loudspeaker, "....sorry for inconvenience....due to mechanical issue... your safety is everything." The announcer kept stumbling when he got to the "mechanical" part of the announcement. It was a lack of confidence. Funny...about 3 minutes before that announcement, an airline employee went running by me. She didn't see me as she said to another employee something about a bomb. Anyway, I was glad my bags weren't already on the previous flight and that I didn't have to scramble.

HappyUP!!! - the annointed turd
Why it happened - someone said "Holy Shit!"
Why it made me happy - I had never put that connotation to that phrase. I don't think I have ever seen such a fabulous feces that it got that kind of billing.

HappyUP!!! - rib eye lunch
Why it happened - I bought a steak on Saturday and hadn't eaten it
Why it made me happy - with traveling, I didn't want that luscious piece of meat spoiling in the fridge. Instead, I BBQ'd it up right before going to the airport. It had been marinating with a little worchester sauce for two days....add a little garlic salt over the top.....grill.....happy tummy!

Sunday, November 04, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 281

HappyUP!!! - waking up early....and getting an extra hour because of the time change
Why it happened - I guess I had slept enough
Why it makes me happy - I love morning....especially right now. This morning, it was like I got two extra hours of it.

HappyUP!!! - GOLF!
Why it happened - we had a tee time
Why it makes me happy - I was playing bad.....bad.....BAD! Then, I hit it tight on 15 and made the birdie putt, got the 4 carryover greenies on the par three 16th, got on in two on the long par 4 17th into the wind, and then almost got home in two on the par 5 18th. I chipped up and made the birdie put. The round was not good but the last 4 holes was two under par.......and that will keep me going for days!

HappyUP!!! - my neglected garden
Why it happened - hey, it was supposed to stop producing...so I stopped watering
Why it makes me happy - I threw a tomato, a jalapeno, and a bell pepper into my salad tonight. I even plucked a loan strawberry and got a sweet treat while I was out there.

Saturday, November 03, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 280

HappyUP!!! - breakfast alone
Why it happened - the gang couldn't make it
Why it made me happy - while I prefer Sat mornings with my adopted family, a little breakfast on one's own can be a good thing. I got to finish my book....the ending left me with tears of compassion and happiness.

HappyUP!!! - top down....doing errands
Why it happened - the weather was superb
Why it made me happy - I have three cars. I probably should get rid of the convertible.....but it ain't happening! Not after a day like today. The weather was mid to upper 70's. There is no better weather than a good fall in Northern California. Just stunning weather.

HappyUP!!! - a gut hurting, tear producing belly laugh
Why it happened - I cracked myself up sending an e-mail
Why it made me happy - the endorphins and/or seratonin....whatever it is that kicks in when you laugh....was raging full on. I am not sure if I still don't have some by-product. Laughter is good for the soul. You can even produce it yourself.

Money and Happiness

(A special post for my friends at SundayScribblings )

I graduated from college with a degree in business in 1981. Interest rates and the cost of money was high. It's funny that I had just gotten through my studies and had no idea what high interest rates meant in the real world. In this case, it meant the employment market was a little bit tight.

This was fine because I hadn't yet decided what to do with my life. Over the course of my college time, I had spent some college breaks helping out my brother. He was a contractor and I would do some work off and on to make a few extra dollars. It was basic grunt work but I appreciated it. It was around the time of my completion of my formal education that he was starting to build a new house on speculation. I had never been on a project from the beginning to end so I was hired on as the laborer. It was here that I would begin a 6 year career in the construction industry. It seems strange to call it an industry. I did about everything. I dug ditches, poured concrete, painted, framed, roofed, etc. They never let me touch the wiring. I think it had something to do with a contractors warranty that future inhabitants would not get fried. This is exactly what would have happened if my electrician skills matched my carpentry skills.

No, I never "got it" when it came to the trades. Still, my brother took care of me and I was able to make a subsistence living between him and other contractors that I knew. I did this for 6 years. At the end, I was in great shape and had an excellent tan. Try framing houses in a Sacramento summer when there are 35 days over a 100 degrees and you start being darkly complected.

I lived in a duplex. Two of my high school buddies had graduated from college and this was their first pad since obtaining real jobs.

When they moved in, they said, "hey, dude, move in with us."

"It only has two bedrooms and, while I love you guys, I don't love either of you enough to sleep with."

Shortly after that, I was sleeping on a day bed in the dining room with my dresser out in the garage. I paid the guys $75 a month for rent. Little did I know, they would have let me stay for free because I had brought a refrigerator and a couch into the equation. Sometimes it was a stretch but I always made the rent.

I think fondly back to those days of being 28 years old and broke. I went into the mortgage business. I learned the craft. I struggled like many do when they begin to build a practice. I ended up almost $3000 in debt. I remember worrying about money. I remember asking myself if I was happy. I never could quite answer the question. I was having a good time. I had my friends.

It's twenty years later now. Debt is far behind me. I have done better financially than I would have imagined back then. I study the subject of "Happiness" now because I never have been able to answer that question, "Am I happy?"

I have come to land at a spot that tells me that isn't a question that any of us should really answer. Are we good judges of ourselves? Should we judge anyone....including ourselves?

Perhaps a better question is, "am I happier now that I have money than when I didn't?"

I honestly would have to answer, "No. I was fine then. I am fine now." I don't concern myself with having enough money to pay the rent. Instead, I concern myself about having enough money to retire. By most standards, people would say that I am doing well. Yet, I could live another 50 years....the US economy could have a recession...a depression....gas could be $5 a gallon....these wars we get in cost a pretty penny....the Democrats could tax the heck out of me. I could go on forever. It is for this reason that I don't.

I have spent 21 years in the mortgage business. I see people behind the facade. I see the bank accounts, the income, the credit reports, the divorces, and the illnesses. From a subjective viewpoint, I can't equate money as a predictor of how happy the people seem to be.

We all have heard it since we were children. The scientists have now studied the wealthy versus people that make a living and have now proven it. I have now lived it. Money does not buy happiness. I am about as happy now as I have always been. It's my nature. I see Donald Trump on numerous shows. He doesn't seem any happier than I am. I see the contestants on The Apprentice go through an arduous process of turning on their friends so they can work for Mr Trump. I ask, "what's the prize?"

Happiness is a pursuit. It is something that must be worked at. Happiness comes from choice. My nightly HappyUP!!!'s and reflecting upon the good things that happened that day have been one of the most effective things that I have ever done to increase my level of happiness. I end every day on a note of reflection about the things that gave me moments of happiness throughout the day. I have more moments of pure happiness now than I have ever had in my life. Just today, I cracked myself up so much that my stomach hurt and tears came to my eyes. Earlier in the same day, I read a piece of a book that moved me so much that it brought tears of happiness to my eyes.

If you have the ability to make choices in how you perceive your surroundings, you have the ability to be as happy as you want to be.

Some Say That I Am Cheap

I live on common ground
Though could afford to dwell among the elite
vacations in modest quarters
Yet could enjoy extravagant villas
Some say that I am cheap

The finest cars can grace my garage
Wines of the finest vintage could tumble across lips
Young women beyond number
could pass before my threshold
All these things I am told that I should desire
Am I cheap or is it that I can't hear

Things pass
Decaying hubris to soil
Hands wither in search of lotion
Unnecessarily exposed to winter's harsh touch

I spend my money to purchase time
Time to spend alone
To conjure upon snails and window pots
The next time we meet
You will find out what they have told me
What value do you bring to me
Tell me now who is cheap

HappyUP!!! Day 279

HappyUP!!! - lunch
Why it happened - my lunch partner was persistent
Why it made me happy - I not only met a potential new business partner but, possibly, a new friend. How do I know this on a first meeting? Commonality. Commonality in healthy areas is the key to building relationship. It's not required but, the more commonality you have, the quicker the relationship can build. An instant friend is what I gained today.

HappyUP!!! - a funny e-mail
Why it happened - I sent one yesterday
Why it made me happy - I didn't expect to get this one back. It was clever and cute....so I shot another one back into the other court that was funny as well.

HappyUP!!! - a trip to my dental hygenist
Why it happened - I am on the quarterly plan
Why it made me happy - we had a nice exchange of ideas and she gave me some education about dental hygeine. I really got some good why's behind the what I am supposed to do. This may get me on the road to happy, consistent flossing!

HappyUP!!! Day 278 Nov 1

HappyUP!!! - nephew's birthday dinner
Why it happened - my sis in law put it together
Why it makes me happy - family time with my bro and his adult kids.

HappyUP!!! - client confirms new assignment
Why it happened - an assignment came up
Why it makes me happy - it was a vote of confidence. I thought we would get it but it was not a given

HappyUP!!! - drive time to Yuba City
Why it happened - I had out of town business
Why it makes me happy - it's not that nice of a drive but there was a subtle fog all the way there. It was kind of the first fog of the year. It was another evidence of the change of season. A beautiful thing.

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 277

HappyUP!!! - Halloween
Why it happened - it's a calender item, silly
Why it makes me happy - c'mon....those lil kids are adorable. The big kids are goofy....and then there was the Name Tag. How good was that? The kid was a big, "Hello, My Name is......" with the white place to write in his name. Of course, there were a few treats for the hard working guy handing out the goods too!

HappyUP!!! - phone call during Halloween
Why it happened - my friend called me back
Why it makes me happy - we just had a fun, silly chat as we listened to each other pass out candy. We covered the full candy report of our full lives......just childish fun! The Nestle Crunch bar was mutually decided as being in the running as the best candy bar ever.....the Almond Joy/Mounds was in there too. We covered them all.

HappyUP!!! - call from an old friend
Why it happened - the old friend called me
Why it makes me happy - there were good things going on in my O.F.'s life. I love hearing that because, last I heard, there were things going the wrong way in that area.

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 276

HappyUP!!! - lunch
Why it happened - we had to celebrate a promotion
Why it makes me happy - c'mon....it's a promotion. I even got my boss to join me!

HappyUP!!! - recruiting appointment
Why it happened - I made an inquiry that turned into something special
Why it makes me happy - I may make an unexpected good add to my team

HappyUP!!! - full house at Toastmasters
Why it happened - we had everyone there....and a guest
Why it makes me happy - the entire room feels much differently when we have a full house. Now, we just need to add a few more members.

Monday, October 29, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 275

HappyUP!!! - free flow of traffic to my dinner appointment
Why it happened - I got some great advice...that I asked for
Why it made me happy - I had an important meeting. I thought I knew where it was...but I didn't have it placed in my mind right. Because I left early on the advice of staff, I beat the traffic window. This allowed me time to actually FIND the place that I needed to be at rather than worrying about looking at my watch. I was in a great frame for my recruiting appointment.

HappyUP!!! - meeting my next two employees
Why it happened - one of my direct reports scheduled the interviews
Why it made me happy - I really liked these people. They will be a great addition to the team. My boss approved my offer letters in a hurry. We will get them on-board....fast.

HappyUP!!! - golf invitation
Why it happened - I did something great the other day
Why it made me happy - hey...it was a golf invitation....from a key business associate....who is very busy. He made the invite. Heretofore, it has been a "let's do lunch" kind of thing. Golf and business....does it get better than that?

Sunday, October 28, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 274

HappyUP!!! - I left the back door open by mistake
Why it happened - I had golf clubs in my hands
Why it made me happy - Shadow took the opportunity of the open door policy and decided she was an indoor kitty. I don't let the S's (Stogie and Shadow) inside. This allowed for some rare recline-in-the-chair-with-kitty-
on-the-lap time. She dug it.......and so did her owner

HappyUP!!! - gorgeous day
Why it happened - welcome to the fall in Northern California
Why it made me happy - I was out in that glorious sunshine all day long...and I mean from 8:30 to 5:30

HappyUP!!! - 36 holes of golf
Why it happened - my golfing partners wanted to go stick it some more
Why it made me happy - I didn't score well. I lost a lot of dough. But, I keep showing some flashes of past brilliance......slow...."take it back slooooow, Nutster." I hit a lot of very, very good shots today. Oh yeah, there were plenty of errant ones but there were some real keepers out there. I wish I could say the putter was working.

Saturday, October 27, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 273

HappyUP!!! - mowing the lawn
Why it happened - first time in a few weeks
Why it makes me happy - it's slow growth season so I was able to "go green" and let the carpet grow for a few weeks. It's looking good now....and the weather was gorgeous

HappyUP!!! - seeing my dad
Why it happened - I needed to watch him for awhile
Why it makes me happy - my bro and sis-in-law take care of him. I needed to fill in the gap today. It's the least I could do. I wish that there was more for me to do as dad heads down the final road.

HappyUP!!! - breakfast with the clan
Why it happened - it's almost any Saturday morning
Why it makes me happy - it's just a bunch of fun...and BS.....and good food.

Friday, October 26, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 272

HappyUP!!! - meeting with staff
Why it happened - I called them in
Why it makes me happy - we don't all sit down at one time that much. We got to go over some things that need to happen going forward.

HappyUP!!! - business opportunity
Why it happened - I had a trainer in town
Why it makes me happy - I have some resources available....this guy may be part of the solution to utilizing them

HappyUP!!! - new strings
Why it happened - a string broke
Why it makes me happy - it's great to have new strings.....but I hate restringing my guitar. The restringing is done and the new, crisp tones are forthcoming.

Thursday, October 25, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 271

HappyUP!!! - lunch
Why it happened - an old business colleague called
Why it made me happy - there could be a business opportunity involved. We also had a great conversation.

HappyUP!!! - reading
Why it happened - I took my few minutes to read before going in to the office
Why it made me happy - I was reading about the subject of "choice" and how that fits into the Science of Positive Psychology. It more than fits. The research that has been done shows that it is at the core. It was interesting that a bunch of experiments were set up that validated a pretty simple concept. There was a little bit of an "Aha" moment.

HappyUP!!! - systems
Why it happened - LA Fires
Why it made me happy - once again, the fires are not a HappyUP!!! The things that people do very quickly are. Many people know about the things dealing directly with the fire itself. Others don't know the things that have to be done to function as a business during these times of natural disaster. Though relatively unaffected, my group all learned through a conference call about what has to happen during times like these.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 270

HappyUP!!! - 4 new employees
Why it happened - my managers are out recruiting
Why it made me happy - these ones are coming from a tough competitor

HappyUP!!! - conversations
Why it happened - I talked to all of my direct reports today
Why it made me happy - I had nothing but good interactions today. No problems...none. No complaints. Now, if I got a steady diet of this, I would be scared. In our industry, I am probably one of the only managers that can claim this. I spoke to every direct report!

HappyUP!!! - chili cheese omelette
Why it happened - I had the special
Why it made me happy - when I go to my breakfast place, it's a short stack and a side of sausage everytime. Before I found this combo, I would get a chili cheese omelette at every breakfast place I would go to. My place has never offered this. I saw it on the specials board, ordered it, and it was deeeelicious.

HappyUP!!! Day 267

HappyUP!!! - Making Strides for Cancer

Why it happened - I got my fanny out of bed by 6 this morning

Why it made me happy - I raised a little money for a cause, breast cancer, that is worthy. It is one that has hit too close to home for me. It was a little brisk this morning which added to the HappyUP!!! in my book. Sacramento has a gorgeous capitol building. Capitol Mall feeds nicely into it. It just makes for a lovely walk downtown with no traffic on a Sunday.

HappyUP!!! - walking with friends

Why it happened - our company had a team at the walk

Why it made me happy - these are people in another work group. I don't get to see them that often. As a matter of fact, I had only spoken over the phone with one of them. It's always good to put a face with a voice. We had good fellowship.

<<<<<-----------Dave Matthews Wannabe

HappyUP!!! - weight and blood pressure

Why it happened - I did the weekly weigh in and every once in awhile blood pressure check

Why it made me happy - three weeks in a row of maintaining my lowest weight of the year. I am not really trying to lose at the moment. I am thinking about making a run at it between now and Thanksgiving. For now, I am thrilled to have it where it is...while not stressing over it. The BP was 100/70....very cool...no issues despite a lack of excercise as of late.

Saturday, October 20, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 266

Why it happened - I schedule it every two weeks with my friend
Why it makes me happy - an employee can be a friend

HappyUP!!! - a deal gone bad and now moving forward
Why it happened - someone screwed up outside of my organization big time
Why it made me happy - my people got it fixed and, despite the inconvenience, they were happy in the end rather than being ticked!

Thursday, October 18, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 264

HappyUP!!! - excellent lunch
Why it happened - an employee set it up
Why it makes me happy - I met a couple of very interesting people that one of my employees has gotten involved with in our business dealings. It was an outstanding business lunch.

HappyUP!!! - working on a little project
Why it happened - I raised the flag awhile back
Why it makes me happy - I get to be "in the know" and, if we solution, my team will be some of the first to benefit. If we can solve, it will be something that makes my people happy.....which is what I am all about.

HappyUP!!! - guitar time
Why it happened - it actually happens alot
Why it makes me happy - I'm letting a little ditty ferment a bit. It's coming along nicely and I am getting the chord progressions down better and better all the time.

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Why it made me happy - a competitor did something stupid

HappyUP!!! - lunch with a branch
Why it happened - I was invited
Why it made me happy - I love talking to the employees two down

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 262....

HappyUP!!! - fixed a broken big deal for an employee and manager
Why it happened - I jumped in on a deal that had gone south
Why it made me happy - I made the company and my employees some money today. The client got what they wanted. There weren't a lot of people that would have had the resourcefulness to do what I did today.

HappyUP!!! - had numbers come in confirming my market
Why it happened - I asked for a clarification
Why it made me happy - it confirmed that I was correct and that I do know my market. That's all I needed to know for my professional satisfaction.

HappyUP!!! - had my offer on a house accepted
Why it happened - I guess the seller is desperate
Why it made me happy - I am getting a rock bottom price and be able to help fulfill a dream that I have had in the back of my head. It's kind of personal. The house isn't for me. This just fills my heart though.

HappyUP!!!

Sunday, October 14, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 260....so much to pick from

HappyUP!!! - knocked it stiff
Why it happened - I hit a great 7-iron
Why it made me happy - the ball rolled up, gently kissed the flagstick, and settled on the lip of the hole. While it would have been great had it gone in, the birdie did pick me up a substantial amount of bets! Plus, the shot was struck perfectly.

HappyUP!!! - a great bunker shot
Why it happened - years of practice......well, if I am so good, how did I get in the bunker in the first place
Why it made me happy - it took skills.....ones I picked up years ago. The shot came at the perfect time. It was perfect execution and I came really close to holing the bunker shot out.

HappyUP!!! - my new, old putter
Why it happened - I did a hack on it
Why it made me happy - I bought a new putter a couple of years ago. Then, I stopped using it. I like the look and how it set up behind the ball....but it was too light. I got out some lead tape and put some weight on it. I also moved the ball back in my stance a bit......and I was knocking in some putts today!

HappyUP!!! - a solid round of golf

HappyUP!!! - nice people to golf with

HappyUP!!! - an intense guitar session

HappyUP!!! - a gorgeous day

HappyUP!!! - saw a buddy that I hadn't seen in awhile
Why it happened - he needed to borrow something
Why it makes me happy - we were close. Then we drifted away. No big...no animosity...just heading down different paths in life. It was great to see him again. Hopefully, we'll get to play some music together soon.

HappyUP!!! - "that's not the kind of rash you can give...it's the kind you can get."
Why it happened - I was out amongst the population
Why it makes me happy - well, this one just made me laugh. I laughed because I overheard the comment above from some people I didn't know. I probably should have been scared because you don't want to be within earshot of someone having THAT kind of conversation. I was too busy laughing because of the content. Think about it....whatever rash they were talking about is one you can give.....otherwise, how did you GET it? Someone had to give it to you!

Friday, October 12, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 258

HappyUP!!! - finding that the error that I suspected existed
Why it happened - I went and audited the guy that did the report
Why it made me happy - some complex numbers were being sold to me as being "the truth" about my marketplace. If true, it means that I don't know my market......self doubt started to creep in. Finally, I said, "this doesn't make sense....something is wrong," to myself. Sure enough, I went to the guy that put the reports together and he had double counted A MAJOR portion of the market. Big implications on this.

HappyUP!!! - taking off a couple of hours early from work
Why it happened - I made it happen
Why it made me happy - come on.....a couple of free hours....just to relax and knock around. Heaven

HappyUP!!! - meeting a long time competitor for the first time
Why it happened - one of my managers recruited him
Why it made me happy - after all these years, I found out that he is as nice a guy as I thought he was. I like good, professional competitors in the marketplace

Thursday, October 11, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 257

HappyUP!!! - e-mail from the big guy
Why it happened - he has class...he acknowledged a "Thank You" note
Why it made me happy - so many reasons. I inter-office mailed this on Wednesday. His office got it on Thursday. By mid-day, he had opened it and acknowledged it via e-mail. You, "no big deal." I can only tell you that this is a VERY big business person we are talking about. Maybe this is how he got to be so BIG. Amazing!

HappyUP!!! - manager meeting
Why it happened - we do it monthly
Why it made me happy - we addressed some "elephants in the room." It was done well. Everyone understands where we need to get to. People are excited. It's awesome.

HappyUP!!! - breakfast burrito
Why it happened - I was at the Chevron
Why it made me happy - besides being delicious, it gave me another story to tell about eating at the Chevron. This gas station has the best little grill inside of it. Everyone laughs about our lunch stories from when the gang would eat there. Now, I have a good breakfast story. What's the story? It was around 6 a.m. when I went in........and there was a line waiting for their burritos. Half of the people waiting were Hispanic! It has to be good.

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 256

HappyUP!!! - stress free commute
Why it happened - I left for downtown early
Why it made me happy - it was raining. I don't usually start my day in Sac. I beat the traffic by about 20 minutes or so

HappyUP!!! - meeting between recruit and boss
Why it happened - I set it up
Why it made me happy - it almost didn't happened. She was going to put it off and miss the oppty to meet my boss.

HappyUP!!! - acknowledged at breakfast
Why it happened - I had my boss mention my 20 years
Why it made me happy - the PRESIDENT of the entire company....BIG company....shook my hand during the photo op and said, "twenty years with us...in mortgage...all here in California?" Yes, it is his job to be smooth...and he was....but he noticed. It made me happy.

JollyJottings

A smooth stress free commute in the rain

HappyUP!!! Day 255

HappyUP!!! - call from a friend
Why it happened - he likes me
Why it made me happy - he was sending me a piece of business....AND inviting me for golf on Sunday! Plus, I like this guy

HappyUP!!! - my new account rep called from Sweetwater
Why it happened - they switched account reps
Why it made me happy - Sweetwater is an "order by internet" music store. I have bought some things from them before so they always have an account rep call me to make offers or see if I need anything. They aren't irritating. My new account rep has his own recording studio.....he was able to make some suggestions as to why something that I am doing isn't working. Awesome!

HappyUP!!! - two recruiting appointments
Why it happened - it was my job
Why it made me happy - they both went well and I have some interest.

Monday, October 08, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 254....it's about the food

HappyUP!!! - Lunch
Why it happened - I set it up
Why it made me happy - well, when two same middle age buddies get together and cute little 20 year old Julie is the waitress with just two weeks of waitressing under her garter come together for lunch, it's going to be a HappyUP!!! Actually, it was just good to visit with a guy in the business. (...and Julie, despite her age and experience, was phenomenal)

HappyUP!!! - a lunch invitation
Why it happened - a guy left me a message
Why it made me happy - this is a pretty upbeat guy and a friend in the business. He left me a message. We'll have a good time later this week.

HappyUP!!! - a sushi invite
Why it happened - an acquaintance and I share similar tastes
Why it made me happy - I'll be having some sushi this week!

NOTE: I had trouble coming up with HappyUP!!!s from memory today. Warning! Warning! Warning! It means I am not looking hard enough during the day and catching them in the now.

Sunday, October 07, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 253......Excitement

HappyUP!!! - helping Dad
Why it happened - I was over at my bro's
Why it made me happy - my bro was in the middle of doing some of the "caregiver" work. From experience, I know it is easier with two people so I got to help my dad and my bro

HappyUP!!! - chat with my nephew
Why it happened - my bro and I are going to make him a real estate mogul
Why it made me happy - I could go on and on about why this little guy is one of the heroes in my life. This kid got dealt a bad hand health wise from the start. He has battled through that....never complained....and is doing OK. With a little help from his uncle, he won't have to rent anymore. (Wow....I almost just started to cry. There are a lot of good reasons to do these HappyUP!!!s

HappyUP!!! - talking with a real estate buddy
Why it happened - he is going to help put the deal above together
Why it made me happy - we got to catch up. We hadn't talked in a long time. I have known him for over 20 years and I have never used him on a transaction (I have only done a couple personally). Anyway, times are a little slow and I am sure he appreciates this piece of easy business.

HappyUP!!! Day 252....Sat Nite with George Carlin

HappyUP!!! - George Carlin live
Why it happened - I made a decision to go
Why it makes me happy - I have always believed that George Carlin has a brilliant mind. Some would label him a contrarian ...I am sure he would say, "thank you." Last night, he unabashedly went down the line of BS that gets sold to people. This makes me happy because it is always great to find a kindred spirit. Carlin was trying out new material in prep for his upcoming 14th HBO Special. Some of his "new" material has been a takeoff of things that I already have made note of in this blog! George, have you been taking my stuff again?

HappyUP!!! - George Carlin seating
Why it happened - I bought at the last minute
Why it makes me happy - I called ahead. "All we have left are the less expensive seats but you will have a great time," the lady on the phone said. I showed up at the box office as the lights were flickering in the lobby signifying that the show was about to begin. "Would you like seats right up front?" the HELPFUL person asked. "Yes...I would like to sit where I deserve," was my reply. Orchestra Pit....row 3....just off to the center of stage left. Awesome

HappyUP!!! - taking an underprivileged kid shopping at Mervyns
Why it happened - I was invited by the Apostolos Fund to help out
Why it makes me happy - these kids would probably be wearing hand me downs from a thrift store. There is nothing wrong with that in my book. Yet, other kids can be brutal. These kids already have disadvantages to overcome just because of where they were born in life. Mervyns ain't Nordstrom so it puts these kids on a par in appearance with most of their peers. From there, the kids are on their own to overcome the challenges. At least this gives them one piece of assistance. Personally, I think a little adversity is good. It makes you more resourceful. Unfortunately, everyone isn't me (...and don't even say that was a typo that should have said "fortunately").

Friday, October 05, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 251

HappyUP!!! - trading e-mail with a back east buddy
Why it happened - I got an e-mail at work and asked him for his private e-mail
Why it makes me happy - he is back in Minnesota. We have only seen each other a couple of times. I have always liked him, though. I am now pretty much assured that I will stay in some kind of contact with him for many years to come......and it doesn't go through the corporate screening! He already cracked me up.

HappyUP!!! - work done...and approved...fast
Why it happened - I got it off my desk....and so did two other people
Why it makes me happy - I can bring some new playmates on-board because these are offer letters

HappyUP!!! - leftovers
Why it happened - I had more lunch than I could eat Wednesday
Why it made me happy - I worked a little late tonight, came home, did a few things, and said, "man, I am hungry." Knowing that I hadn't been to the store in forever, I was confident there was nothing to eat. I went to the fridge. "Hellllooooo Doctor!" I said to that paper bag of leftover Indian food. Exceptional...even reheated.

JollyJottings

Work done and approved...fast
Breakfast

Having stats back me up

Busting another employee

Thursday, October 04, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 250

HappyUP!!! - lead on a recruit
Why it happened - I did a guy a favor
Why it made me happy - I made a guy look good so he gave me the name of a recruit. He had been trying to recruit the person but now he felt like he was being ducked. I called with a chipper voice and...boom...I have an appointment next week with someone that I knew nothing about before.

HappyUP!!! - several pieces of key work off my desk
Why it happened - I NEEDED to get the work done
Why it made me happy - REEEEELIEF.....plus, I caught some errors that the staff made. While I didn't like the errors, I was happy that I caught and had the acumen to make the fixes

HappyUP!!! - dinner
Why it happened - a friend of mine had nothing happening
Why it made me happy - great dinner, conversation, and lots of laughter.....does it get better than that?

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 249

HappyUP!!! - lunch
Why it happened - I needed to congratulate an employee
Why it made me happy - my employee had his best month in his recent career. The Indian cuisine was over the top. Curry is not my favorite.....except at this place.

HappyUP!!! - getting the information in the correct hands
Why it happened - I received a very suspect marketing package using our company's logo
Why it made me happy - this outside firm used our company' s branding in their material to promote their agenda and sent it to me. I saw the material, identified what was going on, and got it into the hands of someone that will do something to stop the process. I love our brand and was it's protector today

HappyUP!!! - chat with a friend
Why it happened - I made the call
Why it made me happy - sometimes it is just good to have a call with some silliness in it.

Tuesday, October 02, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 248

HappyUP!!! - my employees
Why it happened - they are great
Why it makes me happy - this one is personal. All I can tell you that, on a day like today, I KNOW

HappyUP!!! - meeting with the partners
Why it happened - they have an initiative they need driven
Why it makes me happy - there aren't a lot of company's that pull together like mine.....and that is a good thing.

HappyUP!!! - Toastmasters
Why it happened - it was Tuesday
Why it makes me happy - we had two great speeches....even though we were short on attendance today.

Monday, October 01, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 247

HappyUP!!! - "would you like to see me naked?"
Why it happened - a lady busted what another guy said while we were in a meeting
Why it makes me happy - I was in a meeting. The excercise the group was going through was, "what are some good sales questions?" The sales agents were blurting out various questions they ask customers. Then, one of the women said, "or, you can ask the one Paul (name changed to protect the guilty) called me up and told me in preparation for this class, 'do you want to see me naked'?" Everyone was busting up...including "Paul." The schtick just went on from there with me chiming in, "...and I think that casual Friday has just been taken to a new level." It was a very funny part of my day.

HappyUP!!! - lunch with an Assemblyman
Why it happened - I was invited by the company that I was with to sit in with this politico
Why it makes me happy - it gave me a little insight into the political system and what politicians have to do. In a way, I guess I admire it because, somebody has to do that and there is no way I could ever do what this guy does. I could never appear to be that gracious.

HappyUP!!! - my admin came back from maternity leave
Why it happened - it was time for her to come back
Why it makes me happy - she just has a smile that she always wears and a very cheerful presence. I missed it the last few months.

Sunday, September 30, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 246

HappyUP!!! - a beautiful morning
Why it happened - it is that time of year
Why it makes me happy - I just love the change of season. It will be a bit before the leaves turn. The chillier mornings have a freshness that is spectacular.

HappyUP!!! - weekly weigh in
Why it happened - it happens every Sunday
Why it makes me happy - I was on the road this week.....and, despite being far from perfect, I lost a pound

HappyUP!!! - hanging with my best friend
Why it happened - I popped down to his crib
Why it makes me happy - we just got to do some talking about issues and serious things....as well as fun.

Saturday, September 29, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 245

HappyUP!!! - waitress at restaraunt
Why it happened - we had a new, new waitress
Why it makes me happy - the clan switched Saturday morning breakfast venues this week. The girl that brought the coffee, the "pre-waitress", surely couldn't have been working there very long. She was also as blonde as blonde comes. It was funny but cute. One of the members of the clan was funnin on her and she surprised us all by doing a little firing back on him........so she ended up not being quite as blonde as we thought after all.

HappyUP!!! - a chill in the morning
Why it happened - the seasons have changed
Why it makes me happy - the first few days of fall can often be a continuation of summer here in Sacramento. It was interesting to wake up and say, "hmmmm.....perhaps I should have closed some of the bedroom windows last night. Brrrrrrrrr......" The morning chill then gave way to a lovely day

HappyUP!!! - taking care of Dad
Why it happened - bro and sis are out of town
Why it makes me happy - without this task required of me, I would have been doing some work on a brand new situation that came up at work. Nope. This was more important today. Bro will be back tomorrow. I can get the extra work that I need done tomorrow night......or Monday/Monday night. I got my prioritites straight today

Friday, September 28, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 244

HappyUP!!! - HOME!
Why it happened - I was gone
Why it makes me happy - Bakersfield was a hoot (OK....perhaps a stretch) but it is just good to be HOME. It's that feeling when you walk in the door.

HappyUP!!! - Herb Urban
Why it happened - I read his blogposting for SundayScribblings
Why it makes me happy - it was just dang funny.

HappyUP!!! - the girl at the airport
Why it happened - she was a hustler
Why it makes me happy - I get to the Bakersfield airport just before 6 bells this morning. I go to the ExpressJet counter. A small young woman checks my ID and gives me a boarding pass. I go up the escalator and through security. I wait about an hour for my flight. I am now handing my boarding pass to the same gal that was all the way down at the ticket counter. No big deal, you say? Hey, she was hustling which is always good to see but read on, Ms Skeptic. I find my assigned seat. I wait for the passengers to board. The cabin door closes and the plane begins to back away from the gate. I look out the window and see the person holding the orange glow sticks directing the pilot.....it's the same girl! What? Is there only one plane out of Bakersfield that day? I make a comment about it to another passenger and he says, "yeah, I noticed the same thing.....they wouldn't let her lift my luggage down at the front counter....she's pregnant!"

Thursday, September 27, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 243....last day in Bakersfield

HappyUP!!! - solid training session
Why it happened - it's what I am paid to do
Why it makes me happy - people went out of their way to tell me that their perspectives had changed and world's have opened

HappyUP!!! - a great dinner
Why it happened - I grabbed a steak in Bakersfield
Why it makes me happy - dinner with a good friend at a great restaraunt is always a nice thing

HappyUP!!! - my co-facilitators
Why it happened - we were training together
Why it makes me happy - three people working together as a team.....and I hadn't met either of them prior to the training starting. The other two had met but not worked together. We delivered a wonderful product to the people in attendance like a well oiled unit.

HappyUP!!! Day 242....Bakersfield Day 2

HappyUP!!! - helping the regional office
Why it happened - I am conducting training down at the regional office
Why it makes me happy - I like sharing my skills and learnings with the regional staff. It helps out my boss and, when you have a job, I believe one of your duties is to help your boss.

HappyUP!!! - drinks with the group I am training
Why it happened - I went down to the bar at about 9
Why it makes me happy -I like hanging out with people when on the road. Hotel rooms are rather confining. After doing a little work early in the evening rather than going out and eating a big meal, I decided to go have an appetizer and a lemonade. I was pleasantly surprised to find the group down in the lounge. They were NOT drinking lemondade...LOL....and hadn't been.

HappyUP!!! - the regional office gave me a shirt
Why it happened - I always give them a hard time about Bakersfield
Why it makes me happy - I like free stuff! They gave me a shirt with a globe and an airplane on the front. It says, "Cairo....Paris.....London.....Bakersfield." It's pretty funny....and the presentation was the highlight of my day!

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 241....Bakersfield Day 1

OK....I am in Bakersfield - where I work during the day and then head back to the hotel room. It's a pretty limited world to find HappyUP!!!'s, right?

Yes.....you are right! - sure, I could go out and try to "find" some or "create" some but that isn't what HappyUP!!! is all about. It is part of it sometimes but the bigger point is seeing what goes right and noticing what makes you happy

HappyUP!!! - doing a good job
Why it happened - I am doing training for new people
Why it makes me happy - I think that training is part entertaining. You want to get the information across. How do you get it across where it may be inspiring? I won't see many of these people again. I won't get to monitor their progress. All I can leave them with is "that one thing." What is that? This occurs years later when they have gone on to be successful and they say to someone, "you know, years ago there was this guy in Bakersfield....I don't even remember his name. He said.........." ".....and it made the difference."

HappyUP!!! - the people
Why it happened - they had to be here
Why it makes me happy - this is a good group of individuals. They are engaged and happy to be here. They are involved and playing along....and learning.

HappyUP!!! - catching up on e-mail
Why it happened - I have some time while the other's train
Why it makes me happy - I really can't use the phone that much so I can at least get on top of my in box while I am here. It is one less thing to worry about.

Monday, September 24, 2007

HappyUP!!! Day 240

HappyUP!!! - golfing
Why it happened - we sponsored a foursome in a tournament
Why it made me happy - I only got to play about 11 holes as I had to travel. Yet, I hit the ball pretty well. I was teamed with some guys with less experience. I did a decent job of holding up the team. More importantly, I do seem to be holding on to some form improvements that I have been working on.

HappyUP!!! - a direct flight
Why it happened - ExpressJet opened a route to Bakersfield
Why it makes me happy - no more 5 hr car drives....that is not a great drive

HappyUP!!! - spending time with a new hire
Why it happened - she is going to the training that I am facilitating so we ended up on the same flight
Why it makes me happy - she will work for a manager who works for me. My one on one with the salespeople is not something that I get to do. In this case, I was able to learn more about someone that just entered the organization. I am stoked...I think she will do great.

HappyUP!!! Day 239

HappyUP!!! - birthday breakfast
Why it happened - my second family celebrates these kinds of things...a sis-in-law's birthday
Why it made me happy - it was just fun being together breaking bread in the house. The food was tremendous. Oh.....was it ever! Good fellowship. Plus, the cards were pretty darn funny!

HappyUP!!! - property tax bill
Why it happened - I looked at my mail from yesterday
Why it makes me happy - I bought my house from my father. He bought the home in 1973. This was before proposition 13 was passed in California. Long story short, I get his tax base. This is pretty cool. My taxes for the year are less than most people's monthly taxes. When the bill comes in the mail, it makes me happy living in my bungalow.

HappyUP!!! - a clean desk at work
Why it happened - I am heading to Bakersfield and I needed to shape things up
Why it makes me happy - I am not a clean desk guy. When I do have one, it makes me feel good. I am really going to feel good later in the week when I return....I was happy today when I popped in and did some tidying up before leavingl

Going to Hell

This is going to be very short - on a topic that could be expounded upon for pages and pages.

There is a faction upon my Christian friends - who would say that the only way to Heaven is to accept Jesus Christ. This is the doctrine.

Many of the same ones will say - not accepting Christ will send you to hell.

What happened to not making judgement? - upon another and, most importantly, upon yourself. Doctrine is very clear that man is not to judge. Yet, here we are talking about the final judgement.

Be very careful around people - who can't reconcile this properly.

The philosophy of Jesus Christ - is very simple. He breaks it down into the two most important commandments. You are to love Him and love your neighbor. There it is. People make it so complicated. It is not. Why do we have so many books on the subject?

The rest of the Bible - is a preamble. People pick and choose from the Old Testament. They will even justify because it is in the Bible.

Yet, at the end of the day, Christ summarizes everything - to two very simple rules.

Simple.....but the most difficult, if not impossible, - tasks to master. Sure, people will say they can fulfill number one. I'll give them that. Hey, who am I to judge?

But...you know that guy at the office? - or the lady across the street? The ones that you don't like.

Oooops! - I'm out.

Warren Buffett....The Billionaire Next Door

Did anyone catch The Billionaire Next Door, CNBC's interview with the 2nd richest man in the world, Warren Buffett?

I did. While I have some investments and I find that world somewhat interesting, I have never read anything about Warren Buffett. I was well aware of who he was but I never spent any time in looking into "behind the investor."

....and that has been a mistake.

As I watched the program, I scrambled to find something to capture notes upon and began madly scribbling. The following are some pearls of quotes and my observations that I found worthy of note. This guy gets what it is all about...keeping it simple. Remember, as you read the below, this is out of the mouth or observations about the SECOND RICHEST man in the world.

-He has lived in the same modest house for 48 years - (I wonder how many times his wife has redecorated ... do you think they ever got into an argument about a budget for the projects?)

-"How do you maintain ethics and not be greedy?" he was asked. "I had a great time when I was 20. I eat the same things now that I did then. I wear the same clothes. The clothes may be more expensive but they look cheap when I put them on. I get to do what I like and work with great people. Why would I want to be greedy? I have everything that I need."

-"If I had a boat, I'd have a 16 person crew. They would probably steal. They would be sleeping with each other and getting in trouble. What do I need that for? I just need friends with boats!" (I think that I am drawn to this one because I have been saying for years, "I don't need a second home....I need friends with second homes."

-"I have no social contacts. I know what I like. If I am in a seatsuit in my chair with a bucket of popcorn watching a good Nebraska football game, I am happy."

-Every Buffett family member has gone to public school

-Buffet travels with no entourage....and likes it that way. He gets in elevators with strangers. He figures, "why should I worry? I have no enemies."

-"Ethical business is good business"

-"Stay away from credit cards. The letters that I get from people in trouble all revolve around two things...health and credit cards."

-"Invest in YOURself"

-"Trust your gut"

-"Your standard of living does not equal your cost of living"

Finally, how cool is it when someone can pledge THIRTY ONE BILLION dollars to someone else and, when asked why, says, "they are better at giving it away than I am." What a masterful piece of delegation! I am not sure I would want to be Bill and Melinda Gates and have that piece of responsibility heaped upon me!

HappyUP!!! Day 238

HappyUP!!! - Saturday breakfast
Why it happened - it's a tradition with my friend's family
Why it makes me happy - my friend has been missing the last couple of weeks. It was good to see him.

HappyUP!!! - a chance tuning into a piece of talk radio
Why it happened - who knows.....no such things as coincedences
Why it makes me happy - I had flipped on the car stereo. For whatever reason, it was on A.M. which I rarely listen to. The host was talking to a gentleman who used to be a pool contractor but now goes to underprivileged parts of the world and has a way to help them create drinkable water. The ex-contractor talked about the joys of the women in little towns in the Phillipines who have a good time sweeping dirt floors. He said, "they were a lot happier than the rich folks that I was putting pools in for." The host went on to ask him if he was happier now. The man didn't hesitate, "my stress is gone dealing with those unhappy people. Now, I deal with happy people and I am helping them."

NOTE: research has clearly proven that, in a civilized situation, once people get beyond the level of about 50k in income, there is relatively no difference in the happiness level of the 50k people and the 100-150-200k people.

HappyUP!!! - playing some electric guitar
Why it happened - it was Saturday
Why it makes me happy - I don't think the neighbors can hear me during the day when I turn the amp up just a touch. I usually only run my amp at about "1" out of a possible "10." It's a pretty powerful amp. I like to be respectful to the neighborhood. The issue is that "1" doesn't "drive" the amp hard enough to give it the sound I want. When I got it to "2" today, I was playing some basic stuff but it was sounding good...better than the past. No, I am no guitar hero...but I like playing better while I am having my fun.

Hi, my name is........

(A special post for my friends at SundayScribblings)

"Have another Nutter Butter peanut butter sandwich cookie" - I would say I was first addressed that way 37 years ago.

....and I still get addressed that way occasionally today.

Imagine the torment that a young lad like myself had to go through. I was never a very large guy. I am 5'7" now and don't have short man's complex. The combination of those two things means that no one ever got their nose punched for the relentless taunting.

I learned to outwit the witless. After hearing that phrase for the millionth time, I took to acting totally surprised and would go into an astonished, "Oh my God! NOOOObody has ever said that before. You are SOOOO creative. Why aren't you on the tonight show. That's an Absolute riot!" ....and I wouldn't stop. You have to hear me go on and on. By the time I was done, the person wished that they never had been "so creative."

Beyond the Nutter Butter comes the pronunciation. Now, come on. Look at it. Nut...ter. It is pronounced just like it looks.

Think about a 15 year old boy sitting in his high school class as the teacher takes role:

"Nash"............"here"
"Nelson"........."here"
"Newter" (a way too frequent mispronunciation of my fine name)........"what the hell do you put on your toast? Boo-ter? .....here". Of course, the "here" now had to have a voice inflection up an octave from the statement that preceded it.

Even today.....I still have people pronounce "Nutter" as "Newter." I'm not being sensitive when I say, "I DON'T GET IT!" Look at the darn word.....Nut...ter

No, a young man at a delicate age does not want his name confused with having no testicles during roll call with all of his peers present.

Of course, later on, there was the jokester asking about my dating life, "hey....did ya?"
"Did I what?"...I replied
"Nutter?"
Oh my....I wouldn't have even included that but we are doing the full name thing here.
People will often ask me if I am related to a certain Nutter. I often say, "No." They reply, "I thought you would be. It's an uncommon name." I then say, "tell that to the 35 million people in the UK alone that had that name in 1996." Another snappy one is, "well Mr Brownose, it's only the 185th or 285th most popular surname in the United States."

Where does the name come from? The name means nut merchant. Some say it is a derivative of "Naughter" which was a cow farmer way back when. I only know that it appears that the first Nutters in America seemed to land back in Virginia. They leeched inward and one strain went through the top of the United States. The other strain seemed to meander through the South. The ones in the South were known for their horse thievery. While I am not sure which strain from which I hail, why do I have this suspicion that I know? I don't think it has anything do with me liking grits either.

Another thing that Nutter means is a person lacking sanity. It's a British term. "Look at that guy over there. He is such a Nutter." Why do you suppose that fact actually makes me laugh and causes me to love my name even more?

HappyUP!!! Day 237

HappyUP!!! - breakfast out
Why it happened - I had a meeting scheduled with one of my managers
Why it made me happy - my short stack and a side of sausages never fails. Plus, we had a nice chat.

HappyUP!!! - welcome packages
Why it happened - this the official weekend that a company that our company bought migrates
Why it made me happy - the staff was absolutely giddy when I brought them their welcome packages....it really meant a lot. It was neat to see people acting so happy. They were all ladies...hmmm.....would men have showed that much joy? Doubtful.

HappyUP!!! - fixing a conference call
Why it happened - I sat in on a training call...that I had already been on.
Why it made me happy - if I hadn't been on the call, some critical misinformation may have been dispensed. My input got everyone back on track.

HappyUP!!! Day 236.....a new lunch spot

HappyUP!!! - a call from a colleague in the industry
Why it happened - I left him a message yesterday
Why it made me happy - I recruited this guy long ago. I knew he had left the company that had bought the bank who's department he was running. Back when I was recruiting him to work for me and couldn't get him, I actually recruited him to apply for the job to be my boss when it was open. He is good. I found out that in these challenging times in the industry, he started up his own firm. There aren't many guys that could do that right now. He can. He'll do well. It made me happy.

HappyUP!!! - a conference call
Why it happened - I scheduled it
Why it made me happy - I gave all of my managers a piece of this area wide call to cover. It was the first time I had done that. I was happy with their performance...they came through in the clutch and did a nice job for the first time out. Yes, I still came in as the most prepared with the overlay that pulled it together but part of my job is to bring the others along.

HappyUP!!! - a likely invitation to emcee
Why it happened - I volunteered
Why it made me happy - I will probably be the Toastmaster at the Area Toastmasters contest. For a group that is supposed to be good at this kind of thing, this role is traditionally done very poorly.....and I think I know why. The Toastmaster gives no thought to the preparation. They also don't look like the duck on top of the water when things go wrong. I would go to the event anyway...at least I won't have to watch someone struggle!

HappyUP!!! Day 235......Wed and first rain

HappyUP!!! - thunderstorms in September
Why it happened - it really shouldn't
Why it makes me happy - it's been a while since we have seen rain here in Sacramento. We usually get a smattering toward the end of Oct, maybe a bit in November, some in December, and then we hit the rainy season. We are having thunderstorms as we speak. Thunderstorms excite me. First rain excites me. Having things happen out of sequence (that aren't disasters) and that really shouldn't excites me.

HappyUP!!! - lunch with a young friend
Why it happened - he insisted
Why it makes me happy - he is in my industry. He is a sponge. He has some good values and was looking for some advice and guidance. I contrast with some of my employees....this guy seeks the advice of people that have been successful in the business. He will take some of the things we talked about to the marketplace.

HappyUP!!! - motivational books
Why it happened - I went down into the basement looking for a different book
Why it makes me happy - I found some motivational classsics amongst my boxes of books. I drug a couple of them out to keep by my bed. These are easy reads and books you can just read a couple of lines from. In an instant, they can change your state taking you from good to great. Even when you are someone that can stay upbeat, you slip a bit sometimes. These types of readings can get you back on game....even if it is only for a few minutes. Hey, they beat the heck out of consuming OJ news!

HappyUP!!! Day 234.....Tues and a Fed Cut

HappyUP!!! - an unexpected Fed rate cut
Why it happened - Uncle Benny Bernanke threw in an extra quarter of a point
Why it makes me happy - it makes it easier for me to do my business. It puts the people around me in a better mood. It will instill a little confidence in my market place.

HappyUP!!! - a Dow jump of over 300 points
Why it happened - see HappyUP!!! 1
Why it makes me happy - I don't track the money every day. I did a little bit of counting tonight and today was a good day. While I don't let the extreme down days in the markets destroy me, they can be concerning. This is exactly why you must celebrate when things go right.

(WOW!!! - big HappyUP!!! principle in that last sentence. Celebrate when things go right is a key component of the HappyUP!!!)

HappyUP!!! - stuffed bell peppers
Why it happened - I am still harvesting
Why it makes me happy - I just threw some things together, tossed them in the bell pepper, and ran it through the microwave. Quick...somewhat healthy...delicious

HappyUP!!! - a thank you
Why it happened - I gave some advice on a call the other day
Why it makes me happy - I got an e-mail from someone that doesn't work for me but who caught my conference call the other day. He actually used one of the techniques.....5 times! He said it worked tremendously.....he called me a genius. Hey, he said it! Who am I to disagree?

HappyUP!!! Day 233

HappyUP!!! - transparency in a HappyUP!!!
Why it happened - I asked for random HappyUP!!!'s on my conference call today
Why it made me happy - one of the managers that works for me admitted that he was scared before he embarked on a project this weekend. I had prepped people that it was OK to have fear.....that they probably would have fear. He described it....described that he said to himself, "I have to do this," and said to himself, "Action!" He went onward and got a piece of business just a few minutes later. It's an issue that many pe iople have...but few will admit.

HappyUP!!! - a contestant
Why it happened - a commitment was followed through on
Why it makes me happy - we'll have a contest. It may be a one man contest...but it will be a contest and our club will send a representative to the next level

HappyUP!!! - getting gas
Why it happened - I got lucky and noticed I was on fumes
Why it makes me happy - I knew I should have got gas last night. As fate would have it, I didn't have time to stop this morning, "I can make it to my appointment." I did make it to the appointment...and then forgot about the issue. When I next noticed the gauge, I went, "oh crap!" because I knew it was close. Fortunately, I was only a mile from the refueling station.
